Week 2 Parent RESET:
Week 2 is where parents get stuck: you become the system.
Step 1: Keep what worked (don’t reinvent everything)
Ask: What support actually helped last week?
Examples:
10-minute start timer
checking the portal together once a day
a visual checklist
a set homework “start time”
Choose ONE to keep.
Step 2: Adjust supports (make it smaller, not stricter)
Ask: What part was too hard to maintain?
If your support required constant monitoring, it will collapse. So shrink it.
Examples:
Instead of checking everything every night → check twice a week
Instead of 30-minute homework start → do first 10 minutes only
Instead of long “planning talks” → do one 3-question check-in
Step 3: Fade ONE support (without panic)
This is the key move.
Choose one support you’re ready to fade and replace it with something your child can own.
Examples:
Parent reminders → phone alarm / visual cue
Parent checking portal → student shows you their list
Parent initiating homework → student does “First 2 Minutes Starter” first
Important: fading supports is not punishment.
It’s skill-building.
Expect wobble. Wobble is learning.
Required Throughline:
Shrink → Start (10 min) → Sustain
Shrink it. Start for 10. Sustain with the next tiny step.
Name → Narrow → Return
Name what’s happening. Narrow to one step. Return to regulation.
Parent Scripts (quick + powerful):
When they resist:
“We’re not doing everything. We’re just doing the first 10 minutes.”
When they melt down:
“Let’s get your brain back online first. Then we’ll pick one tiny step.”
When you want to take over:
“I’m going to support the system, not run it.”
